WHAT IS  A PHRASE  IN GRAMMARTICAL ASPECT 
DEFINITION :The phrase can be defined  as group of word's (with or without a non finite verb), that doesn't make any sense or meaning.  It forms part of a sentence. 
 Or a phrase is a group of words that doesn't contain a subject and a predicate (verb) in a sentence. 
NOTE: The finite and the non finite verb  is what helps you to differentiate between  a phrase and a clause. 
In order  to understand  a phrase, the following must be considered ;
(a). If the verb in the sentence is preceded  by  To, it means the verb is a non finite verb and therefore  it is a phrase and not a clause. 
example:

(4).reading  and eating
(5).the broken chair
(6).the cunny tortoise 
TYPES OF PHRASES 
There are three types of phrases
which  are;  the noun phrase adjectival phrase  and the adverbial phrase. 
A. NOUN PHRASE
In a noun phrase the header or starting of the sentence is always a noun and be replace with a pronoun. 
Examples are; 
(1).I saw the village  headmaster
(2).The old woman is laughing like a cow
(3).sola told me to hide the broken bottle
(4).The man at the gate.  Etc
FUNCTIONS OF A NOUN PHRASE
(1). As subject of a verb
(2).subject  complement 
(3).object complement 
(4).object  of the verb
(5).complement of a preposition. 
B. ADJECTIVAL PHRASE
Adjectival phrase performs the grammatical  function of qualifying  the noun or pronoun that precedes it in the sentence. 
Examples; 
(1).The man standing at the gate
Adj phrase: standing at the gate. 
(2).The students to be awarded. 
Adj phrase: To be awarded. 
C. ADVERBIAL PHRASE
An adverbial phrase modifies the verb in the sentence and it is tell you more about the following ; place, Frequency,  time, manner,  degree, conditions etc. 
Examples are; 
(1).He took over from the boss
Adverbial: behaviour  and manner
(2).He worked hard to  become  rich 
Adverbial: purpose 
(3).She will travel to Lagos tomorrow. 
OTHER TYPES OF PHRASES ARE; 
GERUND PHRASE: gerund phrases are essentially noun phrases that begins with a gerund
Examples; 
(1).running through the woods
(2).jumping like a monkey
APOSITIVE PHRASE: Anapositive phrase is a type of noun phrase that repeats or rename another noun in a sentence. 
Examples; 
(1).the tree,  a tall wood was beautiful 
(2).the mattreress we're made of a beautiful and amazing fabric materials .
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE 
   A prepositional phrase is a group of f word that includes a preposition and a noun in a given sentence. 
A prepositional phrase will function as either an adjective or  an Adverb. 
Examples; 
(1).before church 
(2).under the stairs
ABSOLUTE PHRASE
An absolute  phrase can be best defined  as a phrase that includes a noun and a participle and any kind of modifiers. 
Examples; 
(1).the bird flying at the mid sky
(2).his ear bend like that of rabbit's. 
SUMARRY
