WHAT IS  A SYSTEM SOFTWARE

MEANING OF SOFTWARE

A software is the collection of computer programs or documentation that performs different tasks on a computer system .the software is a program written by a programmer or software developer. A Program is a list of instructions given to the computer to perform a particular task. They are the intangible part of the computer system.they may come in CD's or soft copy.

TYPES OF SOFTWARE
There are two types of software 

  • System software
  • Application software
SYSTEM SOFTWARE
  System software is a computer software design to operate the computer hardware and to provide and maintain a platform for running application software. The basic examples of system software are


  • Operating system
  • Utility software
  • Language translator
OPERATING SYSTEM
The operating system (OS) is a software consisting of programs and data that runs on the computer, managers computer hardware resources and provide common executive of various application softwares.

Types of operating syss.tem

1.Graphical user interface
2.command base
3.single user
4.Multi user
5.Network operating system

GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE: this operating system have interactive features which makes them user friendly and easier to use or operate. Examples are Ms,Windows,Linux etc.

COMMAND BASE (OS): command base operating systems communicate via a utility. Some special commands are used to access their features and therefore requires an expert to do the operation. A novice cannot easily operate them. examples MS-DOS, Unix etc.

SINGLE USER (OS): A single user operating system is an operating system that is designed to manage the computer resources and allocate them to only one user. Some basically examples are ms-dos, some version of windows etc.

MULTI USER OPERATING SYSTEMS
Multi user operating system is an operating system that allows concurrent access by multi users of a computer. this operating system allows different multi users to make use of the computer system at the same time. Examples are UNIX, XENIX ,etc.

NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEM
A network operatimg system allows and link different computers and users to share resources and communicate with one another. some common examples of those operating system includes Windows NT, Windows Server 2003 etc.

LANGUAGE TRANSLATORS
A Language translator is software that concerts programs written in a source code , into an object code or machine language that a computer understands. Some examples of high level programming language that requires the use of translators are BASICS, FORTRAN, COBOL, PASCAL etc.

UTILITY SOFTWARE
They're used for the general house keeping functions of the computer such as backing up of files, repairing the computer, sorting, copying and printing of files or data's.

Types of translators:
There are three types of translators and they are;

1.Assemblers: an assembler concerts an assembly program or language into a machine code or language, also known as object code.

2.Compilers: the compiler is a program that translates a high LM level programming language into a machine code or language before execution. The turbo pascal compiler translates a written program in pascal language into a machine code that can run on the PC.

3.Interpreter: an interpreter is also a program that translates high level programmes or source code into executable codes during execution. But the difference between an interpreter and a compiler is that an interpreter translates one line at  a time before execution. While a compiler does not do that.

There are softwares written by programmers to perform specific functions. They basically written to solve a particularly problem. Examples

OIL PRICES REDUCES BELOW ZERO NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices plunged below zero on Monday as demand for energy collapses amid the coronavirus pandemic and traders don’t want to get stuck owning crude with nowhere to store it. Stocks were also slipping on Wall Street in afternoon trading, with the S&P 500 down 0.9%, but the market’s most dramatic action was by far in oil, where benchmark U.S. crude for May delivery plummeted to negative $3.70 per barrel, as of 2:15 pm. Eastern time. Much of the drop into negative territory was chalked up to technical reasons — the May delivery contract is close to expiring so it was seeing less trading volume, which can exacerbate swings. But prices for deliveries even further into the future, which were seeing larger trading volumes, also plunged. Demand for oil has collapsed so much due to the coronavirus pandemic that facilities for storing crude are nearly full.
