What is a preposition

WHAT IS A PREPOSITION
DEFINITION:A preposition can be defined as a word used with a noun or pronoun to show it's relationship with another word in the sentence.
EXAMPLES
1. The boy jumped over the fence
2.He shared the food between the hungry children
3.We left for city the city before night Dawn
4.My dad just arrived in Poland
5.The ball is under the table
6.The teacher hid behind the car
 some examples of preposition are listed below;
-among
-between
-during
- over
-to
-from
-beneath
-above
-inside
-outside
-without
-within
-towards etc.
There are certain words which are followed by certain prepositions in a fixed way.These preposition collocate with this words to have a fix meaning. Examples of such words are;
[a]. afraid is always followed by of.
e.g afraid of
[b]. similar is always followed by to
e.g similar to
[c]. congratulate is always followed by on e.g congratulate on
[d]. borrow is always followed by from e.g borrow from
[e]. beware is always followed by of e.g beware of. etc
PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE
 A prepositional phrase is a combination of a preposition and a noun phrase.Examples of prepositional phrase
1.The teacher with brown sandals   will soon be here
2.The man at the gate saw me
3.She works in an oil company
4.The frogs always jump and make creaky noise.
FUNCTIONS OF A PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE
A prepositional phrase functions as the following;
[A].Adjectival phrase
[B].Adverbial phrase
[C].As a complement of a verb
[D].As a complement of an adjective.
